Remember that 100 degree day, with 100% humidity? The one where you stayed blissfully inside with your air conditioning and cold lemonades? Well, while you were cool as a cucumber indoors, myself and this beautiful family ate ice cream, jumped, ran, and dodged waves on Plum Island and downtown Newburyport. And lordy be was it ever HOT!

When I was emailing with mom, she mentioned, when I sent her our What To Wear Guide, that kids clothes were a sort of ‘hobby’ for her. What a coincidence! They are an <strike>obsession</strike> hobby of mine as well. And she didn’t lie…the girls were decked out in everything from Oilily to Paul Frank. All of the girls’ shirts up there are PF, one of my favorite brands. :)

I had them climb up on this lifeguard stand, and a couple minutes after this, all three of the kids dared Dad to jump from the top. Did he? Why yes. Followed by all three of them, haha.

Had to share a quick snap before I dive into editing! :)

You read that title right. Matt Nathanson. On my blog. I’m going to limit myself to two quick snaps of him, because, well, I took a lot more than that:

He’s a ridiculously nice guy. Humored all of his fans and their cameras for over an hour after his set- we had to take advantage of the CD signing and photo op! We were at Riverfest in Newburyport, and though Blind Melon’s comeback was scintillating, Matt clearly stole the show, along with the newcomer band that opened, Needtobreathe. I didn’t bring any of my long lenses for fear of any type of concert-going mishap, so I took this photo with my camera about 3 feet above my head, held there, hoping I would focus on the band. :)

It was an absolutely beautiful day, and Newburyport was packed- we’re lucky we got a seat that close!

Matt Nathanson does, indeed, heart me. ;)

In other news, I will be away from email and phone for the majority of today, Monday. I’ll be photographing the birth of my dear friend Tess’s son. I’m so honored to be documenting his welcome to this world. Pictures to come, along with his newborns, very soon! Oh, and I have the cutest little models to post, too. Stay tuned :)

Until Next Time,

1) I’m currently looking for children between the ages of 3 and 10 to work on photographically creative projects. I have some creative ideas for kids’ shoots that just need to be put into action! I will travel up to 20 miles outside of 01950 to conduct your mini session (up to 1 hour), and all images (in digital file form) and session fees will be complimentary. Outfits and location must be approved by Mariah. Siblings are preferable. The shooting dates will be from July 1st through 4th. If interested, please contact Mariah with date and time available, and a photo of your little models (children do NOT have to be professional models!).

2) I’m looking for up to three last-minute models for a shoot Tuesday night (June 17th), at 5pm. I’m working on a project with the owner of the new local kids’ clothing store “Recess”, and will be shooting the decor and marketing images for their store walls and displays! Kids must be between the ages of 2 and 10, and wear brightly colored clothing with accessories and layers. All images (in digital file form) will be complimentary. This shoot will involve playing on playground equipment locally (around 01950). If interested, please contact Mariah with a photo!

contact@mariahgale.com

I will typically get back to you within 24 hours, but for the “Recess” shoot, will get back to you tonight or tomorrow. Thank you!

Until Next Time,

I had taken pictures of my accents for a client- Hi Victoria!- and decided I might as well post them, right? The white bag hasn’t been emptied yet, so I think y’all deserve a look at my newborn accent props.

Depending on your monitor, these may look very bright. These pictures don’t represent a newborn shoot, rather, the fabulous props that I use in the shoot!

We’ll start with exhibit A, The white bag and my stack of assorted bowls, baskets, and trays:

Some of the yummy fabric I use for boy shoots (disregard those flowers…they got mixed in there somehow!). The basic fabrics I use are the backgrounds for these photos…the fuzzy white, soft tan, black background, etc.

My nautical stripe and beautiful white basket:

The big, wide bowl:

The big, wide bowl in action, modeling fuzzy blankets:

The leaf basket (this just kills me).

The clean, white bowl modeling my black background. Or is it the other way around?

Other accents, modeled with the fabric of the moment:

Sheepskin, tricks of the trade, basic baskets, and blankets are not featured :) You’ll just have to wait for your sessions!

It’s hard to capture a photograph in words, or a life, for that matter. If I were to describe a picture to you, and said “The bowl of apples perched precariously on the frame, halving their sweetness with some unknown world, while the fork sits prominently off-center on the composition, quietly, politely suggesting you make your move before their sweetness tips off into the right…”, you’d picture the photograph, but you wouldn’t feel it, see it, touch it. (You also may think I’m a huge dork for describing apple perching and forks being polite… but bear with me here, people!) The light and the way the subjects sit, the gorgeous, colorful simplicity of it all isn’t described. To see is to feel a photograph, and to photograph is, simply, to feel a moment.

Two women, Stephanie Barnes and Maria Vettese, collaborated, while living 3191 miles apart, on snapping a shot of every one of their mornings…and now every one of their evenings. Each woman snapped her daily beginning and ending, and they put their shots together, side by side, from 3191 miles apart.

These photos speak so ordinarily in their subjects, but so profoundly for what they are. They say “this is how my day started”, “this is how my day ended”, “3191 miles doesn’t matter”, and “it was simple, but so incredibly beautiful”. The dirty dishes you’re not going to clean before going to bed. The bowl of apples in the morning, daring you to carry their sweetness off the frame and through your day.

(Maria on the left, Stephanie on the right). And isn’t it so beautiful that we all start our days so similarly, with the same sweet expectations, the same place settings, and the same hilariously predictable chaos at the end of it? I’m absolutely impressed at the way these truths are made accessible to the world, through the simple priviledge of being able to see and feel these moments along with these women.

”A Year of Mornings” is being published as a book now, so you can’t see most of the images once available online. But ’A Year of Evenings’ is an ongoing photoblog that is just deliciously addictive.

Visit them here:

A Year of Mornings:

http://3191ayearofmornings.com/

A Year of Evenings:

http://3191.visualblogging.com/index.html

Oh, I am in love with these. In love. Imagine looking back on your simple, sweet life, and realizing that your friend, right beside you, though 3191 miles away, has a used grapefruit in her sink, and your stove is dirty. And it’s beautiful.

This little article is all about shooting your kids on the beach, which I can appreciate. Though nothing can compare to professional photos, sometimes you just want to capture your own kids- getting sandy, salty, happy, and sunny. Though as every parent with a camera knows, you need to be on your toes! You need to know the tricks. Here’s the article, with some great tips on photographing your kids on the beach:

Until nex time,

I must admit, I got this article from another photographer friend’s blog. It simply had to be shared, though, and you’ll see why. The author writes about the emotional value of having professional portraits done, and how she makes sure, for her children and family, to get photos done every year. Though I love it for its photographic references, there’s a simpler, more profound statement made: “one way to boost your happiness is to reflect on happy times”. Isn’t that so true? Though a simple phrase, it’s one that so many people identify with: captured happiness makes more happiness. :)

Read it here: Note To Self

Enjoy, and have a Happy Easter!
